Benefits Of Geothermal

There are many Benefits of Geothermal energy, not the least of which is taking advantage of a non-polluting renewable energy source that appears to be all but infinite. One of the greatest advantages of geothermal energy is the ability of countries with few natural resources to heat their homes with nothing but the ground under their feet. In countries such as Iceland, a lack of other resources has led to a geothermal revolution that benefits anyone who visits the now clean Nordic country.

Anyone considering installing a geothermal system such as a heat exchanger will want to carefully assess just what are the main advantages and disadvantages of geothermal energy. For those living in geologically active areas, there is a significant advantage and little if any disadvantage to using geothermal energy when the price of oil becomes prohibitively expensive, especially in rural areas.

Some geothermal advantages include a nearly inexhaustible supply of steam from sources that can be rather close to the surface. There is no need to convert energy to heat or to use it as a storage media because a very big advantage of geothermal is that it’s already in the form of heat. Because of this, the benefits for many industries combine fortunate location + low specific heat + geothermal potential to perform any number of heat or steam specific tasks.

For large producers, the advantages and disadvantages of geothermal energy are largely tied up in the cost of drilling through the often very hard rock to get to the steam or hot water pockets. If cool return water is pumped back in and the magma isn’t near enough to reheat the water quickly, the energy trapped in that water can actually be exhausted.

It is advantageous, of course, for those using geothermal energy, to make spend the time making sure the magma is close by before drilling. Because of this, one of the relative advantages and disadvantages of geothermal power is the cost of exploration and extraction compared with the length of return. A well-chosen site could remain active for thousands of years. The potential payoff is one of the advantages that make geothermal energy so potentially valuable.

Even in areas that aren’t geologically active, geothermal energy has several advantages over other types of energy, in that heat exchange systems may not have any moving parts and can be relied upon for many years. Of all these advantages and incentives, the disadvantages of passive geothermal is the possibility that an earthquake could move or break the underground pipes, requiring the whole system to be dug out again for repairs.

Other problems with geothermal that may negate the advantages and incentives are the relative disadvantages involved in the excavation. It necessarily takes a bunch of oil for all this drilling, so the implementation of geo-thermal is initially dependent on fossil fuels. When geothermal energy becomes far more widespread than it is today, the relative advantages and disadvantages are sure to tip in the favour of Earth heat.
